This project won 2nd place on NPPA.org in last months multimedia contest. I liked the content until they dragged it on through three parts in the flash presentation. It's also interesting how they used video and the music they choose.

Ashley Allen’s niece struts down the run way at the “You Could Stop Traffic in These Clothes: Stop Traffic Fashion Show” on November 9 in the Mark Twain Ballroom in Memorial Union. Allen’s show was called “Priceless” and she wanted to portray the idea that children are affected by trafficking as well. According to the program more than 600,000 people are trafficked each year for forced labor and sexual exploitation. Students paid $7.00 for admission and the general public paid $8.50 and proceeds went to benefit anti-human trafficking organizations.

Zach Kiser, 22, is from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He is staying in Warrensburg with his aunt-in-law who comes to Columbia to shop at the Oriental Market. “It’s my wife’s family, they’re from Guam.” Kiser said. Kiser said they usually get squid to cook for dinner.

Look ma, I got my wings! This was a fun, but very cold assignment...

In class painting with light. I love the way the moon looks behind the tree because the clouds were moving pretty fast and gave it a spooky feel. If you look closely, you can see Colleen as a ghost in front of the cabin.

Erika Breedlove, 24, stretches across her mat during the sunrise yoga class at the Student Recreational Center on the MU campus. Erika teaches nine different classes a week while studying for her masters’ degree in Educational Administration at MU. “Yoga was something I was interested in learning more about,” Erika said. The sunrise yoga class meets at 6:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. “It’s neat because in yoga there’s no competition, it’s more about your specific mat and your specific space, so you don’t worry about what others are doing around you.”

I came up with this idea after a failed attempt at shooting my glass assignment. As seen below, I had an idea of using class reflections and color to get some great shots. I think I did, but they had no content to them, and were not journalistic. Therefore I decided to shoot a commercial-type ad with Alka-Seltzer and a thermometer because the flu season is approaching. I was very happy with my end results, and hope you all are too. Thank you to my partner, Alex G, for putting up with my semi-perfectionist ways... and for dropping the tablets in.

Sara Stogner, 19, is pre-journalism major. She moved to Columbia, MO from Flint, MI after gaining advice from professionals at the Detroit news that the Missouri School of Journalism was among the best. During high school, Sara was involved in a lot. Her senior year she was the student director of theatre, editor and chief, photography editor, and the arts and entertainment editor for her school newspaper.

“All of the photographs in the paper were mine because no one else knew how to use a digital camera.” Sara said.

On top of her busy school schedule Sara freelanced for the Flint Journal and job shadowed at the Detroit news. Upon arriving at UMC she met with the head of the photojournalism department, David Rees, to talk about the early enrollment program. After reviewing her portfolio, Rees decided to allow Sara to start taking the Photojournalism classes early. Sara will officially be in her sequence by fall of 2008. She plans on graduating with a double major in photojournalism and film studies.

I had a really fun time in the lab with Sara. The whole experience was a learning curve for me. With this photo I was trying to create a warmer light, and I did so with an orange gel. What I learned is that you can't have the gel too close to the subject, or they will end up looking like an oompaloompa. So in this case Sara was further away from the light so it created a softer glow that I wanted.
